Sleep Study: How You Breathe Can Affect How You Sleep

November 26, 2020

It’s no secret that a good night’s sleep is mentally and physically restorative, giving us the internal fuel we need to function during the day ahead. But there are some for whom a solid, uninterrupted sleep is elusive; they may have problems falling asleep, staying asleep or experiencing poor quality of sleep.

At North Jersey Pulmonary Associates, Dr. Mahmood and his team are committed to your well-being. Respiratory problems can often be the cause of poor quality sleep and that’s why you can count on us to be your partner in care — getting to the root of your disorder through performing a sleep study.

A sleep study is a simple, non-invasive procedure that monitors what’s going on inside you as you sleep. It can be performed in a clinical setting or at home. There are different types of sleep studies depending on the symptoms you are experiencing and are used to diagnose many sleep problems, chief among them is obstructive sleep apnea, a potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.

Dr. Mahmood uses a three-tiered approach to evaluating sleep disorders:

  1.     Initial consultation: You will meet with one of our skilled practitioners at our office, who will listen to your concerns and perform an initial evaluation. (Should an in-person visit prove difficult for you, call us to arrange for an online consultation.)
  2.     Home sleep study: The test can be performed from the comfort of your own home. We supply the appropriate equipment including a small probe for your finger, an oxygen mask, and sensors for the stomach and chest to measure the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe.
  3.   Follow-up appointment: We will carefully review the results of your study with you, and develop a customized treatment plan that will put you on the path to a better night’s sleep — every night.

At North Jersey Pulmonary Associates, our goal is to help you breathe easy so that you can live your best life! To schedule an appointment or to learn more about our services, give us a call today at (973) 987-6771.
