Ways to Lower your Risk for Lung Cancer

August 26, 2020

The statistics are staggering…and sobering: Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women according to the American Cancer Society.

At North Jersey Pulmonary Associates Clifton, our team of professionals is committed to your care and well-being. That means will be your partner in care, using the highest-quality technology to diagnose your condition, listen to your feelings and concerns, and work closely with other members of your care team to create the very best treatment plan for you.

Lung cancer symptoms don’t usually appear until the disease in its later stages. The most common symptoms include chronic cough, hoarseness, coughing up blood and shortness of breath. Almost all cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking, and treatment options depend upon how advanced the cancer is.

While medications and other interventions can be effective in treating or managing the condition, there are simple things you can do to lower your risk of developing it:

  1. Do not smoke: Tobacco damages cells in the lungs, causing them to grow abnormally.
  2. Avoid second-hand smoke: Regular exposure from someone else’s cigarettes, cigars, or pipes can increase your risk of lung cancer.
  3. Test your home for radon: Radon is a radioactive gas that can be found in homes. It breaks down in rocks, soil, and groundwater and moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation.
  4. Avoid toxic substances: Limit your exposure to radiation, arsenic, nickel, and chromium.
