CORONAVIRUS: DON’T PANIC, BUT TAKE PRECAUTIONS!

March 12, 2020

America is under a big attack from something very small: a germ. Specifically, a new type of coronavirus called COVID-19, which is highly transmissible, and virtually changing the way we live.

In the news, we are getting frequent updates on its spread, leading to cancelled events and school closings. We are told to beware of symptoms such as fever, cough and trouble breathing. By all reports, the coronavirus will continue to get worse before it gets better, as there is currently no vaccine to prevent the disease.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed

At North Jersey Pulmonary Associates, the health and safety of our patients is priority one with us. Because coronavirus can cause a host of respiratory problems — particularly for older adults and those with severe pre-existing conditions — we want to equip you with some measures you can take to decrease your risk of contracting the virus.

  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  2. Cover your coughs and sneezes.
  3. Use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water aren’t available.
  4. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth and face with unwashed hands.
  6. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  7. Stay home if you are sick (except to go to a doctor)
  8. Facemasks are recommended out of the home.
  9. Practice social distancing, as doctors believe that coronaviruses spreads from person to person through the air by sneezing or coughing, or by close contact, such as shaking hands.

At North Jersey Pulmonary Associates, we want to help in any way we can to protect the health and welfare of your family. If you are experiencing respiratory difficulties, contact our office immediately. If your problem is severe, go to your nearest Emergency Room for evaluation.
