Breathe Easier This Summer

July 5, 2022

Even healthy individuals can find the summertime heat, humidity, and pollution putting excessive stress on their bodies and feel it’s more difficult to breathe. For those dealing with a chronic lung condition such as asthma, allergies, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the respiratory challenges triggered by hot weather and air quality conditions can be far greater.

At the office of North Jersey Pulmonology Associates, we advise people with respiratory issues, the elderly, adults who work or exercise outside, and children playing outdoors for long periods to take extra care on sunny, hot, and sticky days.

Several seasonal factors can set off respiratory problems in the summer, including:

  • Rising temperature and ozonelevels

A sunny, hot summer day can raise the ozone level in the air dangerously high. Although the ozone layer found high up in the atmosphere offers protection from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, rising ground-level ozone, which is associated with smog, exhaust fumes, and pollutants can trigger breathing problems. Smokers and people with chronic respiratory issues such as asthma and COPD may be particularly vulnerable.

  • High heat and humidity

In addition to rising ozone levels, the heat of a summer day can set off respiratory problems in a couple of other ways. For one thing, hot air can irritate the airway, causing bronchospasm, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Also, more oxygen is required when it gets too hot, and the body needs to cool itself off. Because this need places greater demands on the lungs, it may trigger breathing problems for people with chronic respiratory conditions. And, if you have a condition such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), you may find it difficult to breathe comfortably on a hot and very humid day when the air has high water content.

  • Pollen, heat, and pollution

As everyone knows, the pollen count rises when the grasses and weeds thrive in spring and summer. Seasonal allergies combined with summer weather conditions can trigger and exacerbate existing respiratory issues.

Some tips for a safe, enjoyable summer

The safest way to enjoy the summer and breathe easier is to check the weather, pollen, and air quality forecasts. When the temperatures are high, or it’s too humid, try to stay inside. It’s best to venture out in the early morning or evening. Look for the shade as possible, wear a hat, and remember to carry medications, water, and even a handheld fan. Remember to eat a nutritious diet, drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Finally, even if you find yourself indoors, it’s essential to keep active.

Of course, you can count on the skilled specialists at North Jersey Pulmonary Associates to provide the guidance and care you need to protect your respiratory health this summer and throughout the year. For more information, contact our office today.
