The arrival of Covid-19 not only started a global pandemic but also raised the specter of a "twindemic." This new term refers to a flu season that emerges side-by-side with a COVID-19 outbreak. Since, by all indications, the flu appears to be having a comeback this season, if you haven't already gotten your flu shot, make it a point to get one now.
Protect your respiratory health and well-being
At the office of North Jersey Pulmonary Associates, our goal is to protect our patients’ respiratory health and overall well-being. Since the 2022 flu season has already affected countries like Australia in the Southern Hemisphere and recently hit areas in the United States, it's wise to be proactive. Even if the viruses don't coincide, as happens in a twindemic, flu and COVID-19 outbreaks can still follow each other.
Peak flu season is at hand.
Remember, the best prevention against influenza is vaccination. By all reports thus far, this year's flu shots appear to be a good match with the circulating strains. While the CDC recommends the ideal time to get vaccinated by the end of October, it's not too late. If you haven't already gotten vaccinated, now's the time. Getting your flu vaccine now still offers protection during the peak of flu season. For one thing, flu season typically peaks in February and continues into May.
Flu vaccines and COVID-19
Despite the fact the flu vaccine reduces your chances of illness, hospitalization, and death from the flu, it does not offer protection against COVID-19. And it's even possible to contract flu and COVID-19 at the same time. With that said, it's wise to follow all recommendations and precautions to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19 as well.
Providing dedicated care to support wellness
As overwhelming as all this information can sound, making a flu shot part of your annual healthcare routine is a simple step. However, we understand that you may still have questions this flu season and concerns about your medical history and risks for illness.
